Personal Writing

Would you like help writing your memoirs? Email me and let me know.

Inspired by my grandmother's memoirs

For years now, I've been working with my paternal grandmother's memoirs, in hopes of publishing them as an ebook and sharing her stories with thousands of people who could relate.

She often wrote about raising kids and growing older with insight and wit. During this process, I've also been "translating" these same memoirs into poems (from English to English).

Turns out, "Gram," as I affectionately called her, had a poetic writing voice. What a pleasure to discover, as a poet myself!

If called by a panther, don't anther.

Ogden Nash*

Gram had a remarkable memory for anecdotes, quips, and "smart alec" phrases. That's how she traveled the world, even though she lived her life less than an hour from her birth place.

She stayed in Vermont to raise her five kids and often quoted her favorite poet Ogden Nash, as she "dithered." Her ability to recall was spot on, since she had memorized the lines years earlier.

.

In six years, she wrote dozens of memoirs, based on the writing prompts from her memoir writing classes. She wanted our family to hold onto the good memories.

I was the only other writer in the family, and the only person to receive *all* the memoirs she wrote before she died, Gram's stories are special to me.

That's why I'm willing to help you write down your stories now - while there's still time.

As a published poet and professional writer, I'm reminded that growing older, being sassy on occasion, and using your voice - it's both important and worthwhile.

Now, I'm interested in passing down stories to the next generation(s)

*This was one of her favorite quotes by her favorite poet.

Write. Start writing today. Start writing right now. Don’t write it right, just write it –and then make it right later. Give yourself the mental freedom to enjoy the process, because the process of writing is a long one. Be wary of “writing rules” and advice. Do it your way.

So you know how to write, you just don't always know the *right* word to use.

As a professional writer, I will help you tell your story by asking questions and listening to the details you remember.

Besides, the details make the story.

Let's work together to write down your story the way you remember it.

I'll even set aside one hour to speak with you about your work - via phone or Zoom, so we can discuss what worked well and what didn't and why.

What types of writing are eligible?

While I enjoy personalizing each project to the client's needs, there are certain topics I have more experience in than others, including:

  • Crafting poems and the creative process
  • Providing constructive feedback on a variety of writing including newsletters, feature articles and blog articles, short stories, poems, etc.
  • How to "infuse" creativity into your own writing, as well as how to write with personality
  • Writing prompts, designed to clear your mind so you can focus on your writing or to help you "flesh out" a scene in your story or novel

If you have a specific project that you would like to work on that is not listed here, I'm open to hearing about it to see how I can help. If I can only help with a certain aspect of your project, then I'll let you know.

Who this package is for:

  • Someone who has been writing for years and is interested in improving their writing
  • Professional writers who need another person's eye on their work

Who this package is NOT for:

  • Someone who's just starting out as a writer
  • Someone who doesn't take their writing seriously

Prices may vary, depending on how many pages of writing are submitted and how many other project-related elements are asked for and added.

Still interested? Click the button below to schedule your constructive feedback session now.

NOTE: These are my basic packages available at the moment. However, if you have a different project in mind, please let me know.

I'm willing to work with you to achieve your writing goals. However, I reserve the right to refuse any work or project(s) for any reason.

Even if only the people in your writing group read your memoirs or stories or novel, even if you only wrote your story so that one day your children would know what life was like when you were a child and you knew the name of every dog in town — still, to have written your version is an honorable thing to have done.
